Happy birthday, February babies!
Your birthstone is the beuatiful, violet-colored amethyst. Amethysts are the most valued member of the quartz family, with a blend of violet and red. However, they can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Most modern amethysts are heat-treated to enhance their deep violet coloration.
Amethysts can be found worldwide and have been used as a gemstone for thousands of years. Russia once claimed the title of the finest amethyst producer, with Russian amethysts featured in many of the European royal jewelry. including that of Catherine the Great and the Bristish Crown Jewels. Amethysts have also tradionally been known in the Christian Church as the "Bishop's Stone" due to it's purple color and royal affiliation.
Today, Brazil and Zambia lead the world in amethyst gemstone mining and production. Most amethysts are small, pyramidal crystals, although Mexico is famous for its tall, elegant prismatid crystals, which are very highly regarded by collectors. Amethyst-lined geodes are very common, some of which can be over 10 feet tall and weighing several tons.
