Oh, you lucky October babies! You get not one, but two birthstones! We talked about Opals in the last blog post, so now we'll talk about the other birthstone: Pink Tourmaline! Pink Tourmaile is a fascinating little gemstone. Like the opal, no two tourmailes are alike, and many have two or more colors. Some even change color from in natural to artificial light. Tourmalines come on all colors of the color spectrum. "Verdelite" is a popular emerald green color, and a "Pariaba" is a brillant blueish green stone. Canary tourmalines are bright yellow, of course, and make a beautiful, unusual setting. However, the bicolor tourmalines are especially wonderful, sometimes resembling the rind and center of a watermelon in color! Interestingly enough, the tourmaline was thought by the Ancient Egyptians to have passed through the rainbow in the way to the surface of the earth, due to their intense wide-ranging colors. Color aside, tourmailes have another interesting quality; they can become electrically charged when heated like a magnent!
